16.Their Lives

As shadows lengthened on the dusty path back to the salon,Sanskriti quickened her pace, worry knotting her brow.

Ved matched her steps, bag lighter now, voice gentle."Don't fret, Mona is a good person. She will forgive us for running late with the helping."

They reached arounded the corner.Mona stood arms crossed outside the salon door, face red with anger, eyes flashing sharp.

"Two hours plus! What kept you?" she snapped, voice rising hot.

Sanskriti rushed forward quick, stopping her with a hand on her arm, books clutched tight. She pulled Mona into a walk without a word, bidding Ved a hurried goodbye wave.

As they started moving forward, Ved shouted a warm "Thanks!" from behind. He smiled soft, watching them go as evening cooled the air.

As Mona and Sanskriti walked away fast,Mona's anger spilled out in whispers.

"Two hours! You vanished with him,What if something happened.Do you even know how worried i was!"

Sanskriti squeezed her arm gentle, voice calm and full of wonder.

"You should have seen Ved and his friends, Mona.Prakash and Rohini waited with medicines ready. They gathered all the people under the peepal tree.Ved opened his bag and gave quinine tablets for fever. He told everyone about clean water to fight malaria and typhoid. Simple words, but eyes lit up grateful. They helped an old auntie and a boy with cough too. Real heroes, doing good quiet work.

Mona listened close, anger fading full now.

"Sounds big.Worth the late?"Sanskriti nodded.

Mona huffed but softened slow, eyes wide with fresh worry.

"Warden aunty will kill us it's almost dark now!"

She glanced back at Ved's fading figure.

"Fine, but next time, one hour means one."

They laughed light despite the scare, books bouncing in Sanskriti's arm, evening lamps flickering on as home pulled them close.Hearts full from the day, their friendship strong as ever.

As they hurried home under flickering lamps, warden aunty's stern face loomed in Sanskriti's mind, but the day's warmth lingered strong.

Mona linked arms tight, voice curious now.

"Tell me more, did Ved say why he does all this helping?"

Sanskriti smiled soft, eyes distant with memory. "His heart pulls him there.Studies medicine quiet, carries bag full of hope for the poor lanes. Today felt special, walking those paths with him."

They reached the gate breathless, slipping in just before curfew bell, laughter sealing the adventure tight .

They slipped past the gate. The curfew bell rang sharp at that moment.Their hearts raced from the close call.Warden aunty peered out from her door. She missed them in the dim light. She grumbled and went back inside.

Mona exhaled a long breath. She pulled Sanskriti to their room.Lamps glowed soft inside the room. The light fell on their shared books and dreams.Mona flopped down on the bed.Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"Admit it.Ved has you thinking deep.Sparks flew today between you two."

Sanskriti blushed a little. She unpacked her books slowly.

"Maybe so. His heart shines the brightest. He helps those poor lanes with no show at all.It makes a girl wonder about him."

Night wrapped quiet around their whispers. The day's magic settled sweet in her chest.Dark room filled with soft breaths and dreams. Sanskriti lay awake longer, replaying Ved's warm eyes and helping hands, heart full quiet .

Four months passed quietly in the college town, like soft whispers of wind weaving through the busy streets and echoing off the hostel walls. Sanskriti's exams loomed just one month away now, a heavy shadow over her days. She spent long hours in her small hostel room, surrounded by stacks of books and notes, studying late into the nights under the steady hum of the shared corridor lights.

Her heart carried a mix of worry for the tough papers ahead and a quiet hope that hard work would light her path forward. After that memorable day at the bookshop and the time they helped each other with simple tasks, Ved crossed her path by pure chance two more times.

The first meeting happened at the familiar chai stall, which was just outside of her college,

where warm steam rose from bubbling kettles and mixed with the chatter of students rushing by.

He stood there with a group of people she did not recognize, their faces unfamiliar and voices low in serious talk.Their eyes met across the crowd, and her heart jumped fast, a sweet ache spreading through her chest like a sudden warm rain. She wished the moment could stretch forever, just them in that busy corner.

He felt the same deep pull inside, his gaze softening with a longing he kept hidden behind a calm smile. They stepped aside for just a few stolen minutes, away from his companions.

"How are your studies going?" he asked gently, his voice full of real care that made her feel seen.

"They are tough, with so many chapters left, but I push on every day... and you? How have your days been?"she replied, her smile bright but hiding the warmth blooming deep in her soul, like flowers opening to hidden sun.

Words flowed easy between them quick shares about her exam stress, his busy schedule but the air hummed with unspoken feelings.

Then his group called him back, and he had to leave with a nod that lingered too long.

The second chance came in the crowded market, where voices buzzed loud all around, vendors shouting prices for fresh fruits and spices under colorful awnings.

Again,Ved walked with those same strangers she did not know, deep in their hushed discussion amid the push of shoppers.Spotting her felt like a spark in the chaos; her heart beat wild once more, that familiar ache returning stronger, pulling at her like an invisible thread.

He broke away just long enough for another brief talk, his presence filling the space with quiet intensity.

"How is the battle with those books treating you?" he murmured, eyes holding hers with a warmth that stirred her deeply.

"Still fighting hard... one month to go feels both close and far. What about you everything alright?"she answered softly, her fingers twisting the edge of her dupatta, soul alive with the joy of his nearness.

He shared a bit about his own challenges, voice steady but laced with care for her.Their conversation stayed short, just minutes carved from the market's rush, yet every word carried weight, every glance a promise unspoken.

Duty pulled him away again, leaving her standing there with a heart heavy and full, replaying his smile in her mind long after. Those fleeting meetings left echoes in both their hearts what might have been if time allowed more, if strangers did not stand between. The pull grew stronger with each goodbye, a silent longing that colored their separate days, waiting for the next twist of fate.

In Kuru,

Atharva finally stood tall and strong. His deep wound had healed clean, leaving only a faint scar like a warrior's badge.Golden sunlight sliced through the tent flaps, warming his bare chest as he flexed his arm slow and sure no pain, just power returning.

Shaurya propped up on his cot nearby, bandages fresh, eyes lighting with brotherly fire.

"Look at you, unbreakable again.Camp's too quiet without your sword arm."

Commander Vikram went easy on Atharva for the past months because Atharva had a deep wound from the shot.He told Atharva to rest fully and skip all patrols and drills while the others worked hard. Now Atharva's wound had healed completely and his strength returned strong.

Vikram called him to the command tent where smoke filled the air from a central fire and maps lay spread on a rough table.

"You have healed well now," Vikram said in a deep voice with sharp eyes.

"No more rest for you.Start your usual tasks from dawn tomorrow.Lead the dawn patrol.Make the scout reports sharp.Enemies move near the ridge so prove your worth again."

Atharva stood tall with his chest full of new purpose. The duty felt like a heavy but welcome chain around him.Shaurya nodded from the shadows ready to stand by his side as brothers forged stronger in the commander's clear orders .

The next morning broke clear and sharp over the Kuru camp.Dawn light touched the tents as soldiers woke and moved about.

Vikram handed them weapons after the long rest.

Atharva took a sturdy shield, a long rifle slung over his shoulder, and a pistol at his belt.

Shaurya gripped his own rifle and revolver ready for quick fire.

The guns felt solid and right in their hands after months without them.A deep thrill ran through them both, strength alive again.

"Lead the patrol now," Vikram ordered with a firm nod.

"Watch the ridge close for any enemy signs.Train the new soldiers hard after you return."

Atharva and Shaurya marched out side by side, weapons gleaming under the rising sun, hearts pounding with duty, brotherhood, and the sharp promise of battle .

Atharva and Shaurya led the evening patrol from the Kuru camp.Their boots crunched on damp grass as dusk fell soft over the land. The ridge stood sharp ahead against the fading sky.

It might hide enemy watchers in the shadows. They walked with ten good men in a tight group.Rifles stayed ready.Fingers rested light on triggers. The air smelled cool with pine and far smoke from campfires.

Halfway up the hill,Atharva raised his fist to stop everyone. His eyes spotted small movement in the rocks below. He saw a flash of metal and strange shadows in the dim light. Shaurya knelt low next to him.

He looked through his rifle scope. His breath stayed even.

"Three enemy scouts down there. They have heavy guns. This is just a probe, not a big attack," he said in a low voice full of calm excitement.

Their hearts beat faster. They signaled the men to set a trap. The sides moved quiet.soon the first gunshots rang out loud in the evening hush .

Atharva squeezed the trigger first. His rifle cracked sharp in the evening hush. The lead enemy scout jerked back and fell from the rocks with a cry.

Shaurya fired next. His shot hit the second scout square in the chest. The man dropped his gun and tumbled down the slope. The third scout spun around fast.

He raised his heavy rifle to shoot back. But the patrol men flanked him quick from both sides. Two rifles barked together.Bullets tore into him. He crumpled silent to the ground. The trap worked clean. No one on their side took a hit.

Atharva stood up slow with rifle still aimed. He scanned the rocks and shadows for more danger.

Shaurya rose beside him with a nod of respect. "Clean work, brother.Three down none up.Let's check their gear and report back."

The patrol gathered close. Hearts slowed from the rush. Dusk deepened as they moved forward careful.

Atharva and his men moved down the slope carefully in the deepening dusk. They reached the three enemy scouts on the rocky ground. Atharva knelt by the first body.

He checked the man's pockets and belt.He found fresh maps marked with camp positions.

Shaurya searched the second scout quickly. He pulled out loaded ammo clips. He found a notebook full of coded notes on troop moves.

"These probe deep, brother. They know our patrols too well," he said with a frown.

The third man carried a heavy rifle that was still warm.He had orders scribbled in haste. The enemy camp sat just two ridges over. They built for a push. The patrol stripped the gear clean. They left no traces behind.Hearts stayed steady now with the win.

They bound the scouts' hands loose for prisoners if alive. All three stayed down cold.

"Back to Commander Vikram fast. This changes the watch," Atharva ordered firmly.Torches lit up from camp as they turned home. Night fell thick with new warnings.
