19.Engagement Ceremony

At Rajgarh palace

Atharva sat close to his grandmother Rageshwari Devi in her quiet chamber.Soft lamps cast a warm glow on her wise face. She held his hand gentle and asked with care.

"My dear how have you been? How is camp life treating you?"

Atharva smiled soft. "I am doing well badi Maa."

She nodded glad then leaned in curious. "Tell me of the military training. Did the swords feel heavy? What strength did you gain there?"

He spoke simple of dawn drills sword fights and camp fires. "Pain built muscle and mind.I learned to lead Men."

Her eyes shone proud. Then her voice turned firm and low.

"Stay ever watchful my child.Shadows move in this palace.Build your strength to claim the throne one day.Be ready for all tests."

Atharva nodded firm eyes steady with her words. He felt the weight of her warning deep. Rageshwari Devi smiled soft then squeezed his hand.

"Now go take rest my brave one. Tomorrow brings special joy for Gauravi.Sleep well and rise strong."

He rose with respect bowed low and left her chamber quiet.Moonlight guided him to his room. After a warm bath Atharva lay down on his soft bed. Water still dripped from his hair. The room felt quiet under moonlight.

He thought deep about his grandmother's words. "Shadows move in this palace." Her warning lingered heavy. Strength for the throne.Who lurks close?

Thoughts drifted soft to that girl's memories.her beautiful hazel eyes sparkled in his mind. Her furious expressions lit fire in old palace games.Cheeks flushed red when she scolded him playful.Heart raced now at her fierce grace. In his mind he vowed strong.

Soon he will find her.He will make her his forever.

Sleep came slow with dreams of her gaze and hidden palace foes.

The next day,

Morning dawned with pure joy at Gauravi's engagement ceremony, the princess of Rajgarh. Sunlight bathed the grand palace courtyard in golden hues, where silk tents bloomed like flowers and jasmine garlands swayed gently in the breeze.

Laughter and music filled the air as guests in shimmering sarees and sherwanis gathered, their faces lit with delight

Gauravi shone like a dream in her crimson lehenga embroidered with gold zari, her eyes sparkling with happiness.

Yuvash and Devika joined Atharva near the flower-decked mandap, their faces beaming with mischief and warmth.Yuvash clapped Atharva's shoulder hard, grinning wide.

"Look at our princess stealing hearts, yaar!"

The trio laughed together as Gauravi turned, waving them over with sparkling eyes.Yuvash teased the prince playfully about keeping up with Rajgarh fire, while Devika slipped extra sweets into his mouth so that he won't speak anything stupid.

The prince of Vatsal, handsome in ivory sherwani, knelt before her with a velvet box holding twin diamond rings that caught the light like stars.

As he slipped the ring on her finger, she blushed deep, her hand trembling with joy, and the crowd erupted in cheers and petal showers.

Atharva and his friends stood close, clapping with a proud grin, while Rageshwari Devi sprinkled sacred rice, whispering blessings for eternal love.

Dancers swirled in vibrant ghagras to rhythmic dhol beats, their anklets chiming like temple bells.

Sweetmeats overflowed gulkand laddoos, kesar rasgullas passed on silver thalis amid hugs and toasts.

Gauravi and her prince shared a shy glance, foreheads touching in promise, as fireworks bloomed soft in the sky.

The feast deepened the joy at Gauravi's engagement ceremony, turning the palace into a haven of warmth and revelry.Long tables groaned under silver platters of steaming biryanis fragrant with saffron, crispy jalebis dripping honey, and creamy kheer studded with almonds, as guests savored each bite amid clinking glasses and shared stories.

Atharva sat with Yuvash and Devika at a corner table draped in marigold chains, plates piled high.Yuvash piled more kebabs onto Atharva's thali, laughing loud. "Eat up, prince! Can't chase palace shadows on empty stomach."

Devika nudged him playful, offering a rose-flavored falooda. "Remember college feasts? This tops them all."

Their chatter flowed easy, pulling Gauravi over for a quick group hug, her ring glinting as she fed them sweets.Laughter swelled with the king's rare toast to enduring alliances, fireworks painting the night sky in bursts of color, binding hearts closer in Rajgarh's golden light.

After a few minutes at the feast,Atharva signaled Yuvash with a subtle nod toward the quieter side of the palace.

"Come, let's grab a drink away from the crowd," he murmured low. Yuvash grinned quick, setting down his glass, and they slipped away together, leaving Devika chatting lively with Gauravi amid the sweets and laughter.

The two friends wove through marble corridors lit by flickering lights, the feast's music fading soft behind them. They reached a secluded balcony overlooking moonlit gardens.

Atharva excused himself from the balcony with a quick word to Yuvash.

"Wait here,yaar I'll grab a bottle from father's store."

He slipped down the corridor toward the royal cellar,a shadowed chamber where aged whiskeys and rare vintages rested in oak barrels.

On the way, voices rose sharp from a side chamber.Peering through arched doors,Atharva saw his brother Vikrant, flushed and drunk, gesturing wild to a cluster of court friends.

"Father sees nothing! I win battles, bring glory yet he doesn't appreciate me.And Atharva? That troublemaker slips free every time,no punishment!"

Vikrant slammed his fist down, voice cracking with fury. "I toil endless, yet the throne stays blind to me!"

In rage,he hurled his glass shattering across the table, shards glinting like broken trust.

Atharva's chest tightened, upset deep at the raw pain in Vikrant's words. He turned silent, fetched the whiskey bottle quick from the cellar, then returned to the balcony.

Yuvash raised a brow as Atharva poured heavy, downing a long swig. "Rough night already?" The stars watched as silence hung thick.

Atharva and Yuvash shared a few strong drinks on the moonlit balcony, the whiskey burning warm trails down their throats amid low chuckles about old college scrapes.

Suddenly, a guard approached brisk steps, uniform crisp under the glow.

"Prince Atharva, your father summons you at once. Important matters in the council chamber."

Yuvash clapped Atharva's back light. "Go handle the throne games, yaar. I'll mingle back at the feast."

Atharva nodded grim, bottle in hand, steeling himself as he followed the guard through echoing corridors, Vikrant's bitter words still echoing in his mind.

At Sanskriti's Mansion,

At Sanskriti's mansion, the evening stirred with preparations for Gauravi's engagement. Her father, the royal treasurer for the Rajvansh family, adjusted his traditional angarkha with a silk safa turban before the mirror.

"Are you both ready? The car waits," he called out, voice steady with duty.

Saudamini smiled from the doorway, holding a shimmering lehenga of deep emerald silk embroidered with paisley patterns."Sanskriti, wear this one, beta. You must look your prettiest tonight."

Sanskriti nodded calm, slipping into the flowing attire that hugged her grace, its dupatta cascading like a waterfall, hazel eyes catching the lamplight. The family stepped out together, the mansion's lanterns flickering farewell, car engine humming toward palace lights alive with joy.

As they reached the palace gates amid the engagement's vibrant glow, Saudamini took Sanskriti's arm gently. "Come dear, let's introduce you to the royal families here tonight."

They wove through the throng of silk-clad guests, electric chandeliers sparkling overhead, the air rich with biryani scents and laughter.

Saudamini smiled warm, nodding to clusters of dignitaries from allied kingdoms, her voice light as she presented Sanskriti. "Our daughter, so graceful for such joyous nights."

Sanskriti stood poised, hazel eyes scanning the crowd calmly, her emerald lehenga shimmering under the lights as greetings flowed polite and sweet.

While scanning the crowd amid the palace's sparkling lights, Sanskriti's hazel eyes locked on a familiar figure chatting close with Devika. He had his hand resting casual on her shoulder. Her mind raced she recognized him as the man from last year's chaotic accident and the wedding ceremony. Her eyes widened in surprise.

(She had only met Vikrant and Gauravi during childhood palace visits before moving to Pratapgarh. She never met the second prince face-to-face.Only Whispers of his wild antics and Casanova reputation reached her, but she had no idea this man was Atharva.)

Saudamini chatted nearby, oblivious,as Sanskriti watched him quietly.

Soon Sanskriti saw the familiar man moving somewhere with another fellow through the crowd. She turned quickly and started walking toward Gauravi to congratulate her on the engagement.

Gauravi stood radiant amid well-wishers,her ring catching the light as she hugged guests.Sanskriti approached with a warm smile."Congratulations, Gauravi jiji, may your joy last forever."Gauravi pulled her into a quick embrace, eyes bright.

"Sanskriti! So glad you came.Join the dances later?"The two chatted light amid the feast's hum,old childhood ties sparking easy.

Few minutes later, Sanskriti excused herself politely from Gauravi with a smile. She started walking toward her mother through the bustling crowd. Just then, she saw Ved approaching her directly, his face lit with a friendly grin.

Sanskriti felt a little scared inside. She knew if her mother saw her talking with Ved,a guy from a poor family,Saudamini wouldn't spare her, quick to scold and pull her away.

Ved said, "Hey Sanvi, what a pleasant surprise to see you here."

(Ved's father, a wealthy merchant, was invited to the engagement ceremony, though Sanskriti didn't know his background yet.)

She replied nervously, "I'm fine, and it's good to see you too.But I can't talk much my mother is here."

He understood her situation right away and playfully winked at her, "It's okay, soon we'll meet"before turning to meet other guests.

Sanskriti let out a sigh of relief and looked around, spotting her mother watching her. When she reached Saudamini, her mother asked curiously, "Who was that, dear?"

She replied simply,"Some man from the groom's side asking for directions."

Fortunately,Saudamini showed no further curiosity about the man and simply nodded, turning back to chat with nearby guests. Sanskriti felt thankful inside, her tension easing like a held breath released.

Atharva walked toward the garden area where guests mingled, heading to join his father. His eyes scanned the crowd and suddenly fell on those familiar hazel eyes across the way.A man blocked his view, and Atharva grew furious seeing her shy gaze with soft expression on that stranger anyone could tell she admired him.

He turned sharp to the nearby servant.

"You go ahead tell my father I'll come in a few minutes."

The moment he looked back toward the girl, she had vanished into the crowd. For a second he wondered if he mistook her, but his fast heartbeat told the truth he knew it was her.

While Sanskriti stood with her mother amid the garden guests, she said softly,"Ma, I'm exhausted I want to go back to the mansion."

Saudamini nodded understanding. "Go ahead, beta. The driver waits by the main gate."

Sanskriti moved toward the palace's grand entrance, her emerald lehenga whispering against marble floors, weaving past lingering clusters of laughter and lights.Night air cooled her skin as she neared the gates, unaware of eyes that might follow.

Sanskriti stepped out from the crowded, noisy palace hall into the quieter night air.She walked slowly toward the main gate, her heavy lehenga weighing her down more than her own steps, its emerald silk and embroidery dragging soft against the stone path.
